It started with a rider who needed it herself
In 2020, Elizabeth Põder crashed at the national U25 showjumping championships and tore soft tissue through her neck and shoulder. The European Championships were coming. What she found, looking for a way back, was that training stress is specific and local while almost every recovery option on offer is general, systemic, or aimed at the symptom rather than the tissue.
That gap sent her into six years of reading, and it led to carnosine — a dipeptide already concentrated in fast-twitch muscle, where it buffers hydrogen ions and holds contractile function together under fatigue. Horses carry it at higher concentrations than almost any other athlete on earth. The catch is delivery: fed, it degrades before it reaches anything, and the indirect routes need weeks of loading that bear no relation to how one hard day actually feels.
The horses in her own yard were the obvious test. Same problem, larger muscles, and a competition calendar that never waits for anything to settle. Elizabeth, together with Jaanus Põder and Laidar Laos, worked with scientists and formulation specialists from the University of Tartu to put carnosine where the load happens. Carnogel is manufactured in Denmark under regulated conditions and batch-tested before release, and it contains nothing on the FEI prohibited list — which for a competition yard is the first question, not the last.
